Summary

Supervisory control lies between centralized control and distributed control. It defines a hierarchical system in which low level controllers, frequently analog, control the process and high level controllers select set points, monitor status, and detect alarm conditions. Supervisory systems are more reliable if setpoints are maintained despite loss of supervisory control. (cbb 5/80)
