The bad news is that the rich design space for hypermedia presents designers with many agonizing tradeoffs. In the thrill of implementation, designers may avoid facing up to these tradeoffs and thus permit the system to become too complex. Our experience with these tradeoffs has encouraged us to practice a design philosophy of voluntary simplicity, striving to make do with fewer concepts and mechanisms.
