hardware for interprocess communication

Summary

H.-P. originally developed the IEEE 488 standard for interconnecting instruments. The standard specifies both hardware cabling and connectors. Communication is character or byte strings but the protocols are not specified. H.-P. is currently setting up a protocol for its own instruments. Each instrument bus under IEEE 488 defines a bus controller which sets up devices as listeners or talkers. (cbb 5/80)

Quote: IEEE 488 instrument bus is very good for small systems since modules just plug together
