Summary

Manual indexing is the assignment of index terms and categories to papers and the contents of books. Medical information is manually indexed. Manual indexing remains prevelant for book indexes, but has been supplemented by full-text indexing for the Web.

Indexing is subjective. People pick different terms for the same content. Medline achieves 75% consistency for checktags (basic-level categories) (cbb 10/07)

Subtopic: indexing as communication up

Quote: information retrieval is a process of communication between inquirers and indexers; i.e., a problem of language and meaning, or use [»blaiDC_1990]
Quote: indexers should get feedback from inquirers but usually get feedback from other indexers [»blaiDC_1990]
Quote: want inquirers and indexers to be using search terms in substantially the same way
Quote: besides providing an access path for retrieval, an index describes the term usage of a database; signature files lose this information [»eastCM1_1988]

Subtopic: indexing as subjective up

Quote: principle cause of failure in information retrieval is differing names for the same thing [»remdJR11_1987]
Quote: wide variability found in spontaneous word choice; systems need unlimited aliasing [»furnGW11_1987]
Quote: approximately half of the twice-indexed abstracts were assigned to different headings [»sievMC1_1991]
Quote: measured indexing consistency in MEDLINE: 75% for checktags to 34% for main headings with subheadings [»funkM4_1983]
Quote: indexing consistency is higher for central concepts and lower for main headings with subheadings [»funkM4_1983]
Quote: index consistency highest for checktags, a small set of basic-level categories preprinted on the indexing form [»funkM4_1983]
Quote: chemical and anatomy terms were more consistent than health care, technique, and psychology terms [»funkM4_1983]

Subtopic: manual indexing up

Quote: description of manual indexing of Chemical Abstracts with marked abstracts and index cards [»bernCL4_1948]
Quote: Chemical Abstracts index based on novelty and emphasis [»bernCL4_1948]
Quote: used edge notched punched cards for post-coordinate indexing and searching; custom designs for scientific data [»kilgFG4_1997]

Subtopic: avoid proper names up

Quote: do not use proper names as the sole index to critical records; they serve many functions and create difficult problems [»normDA4_1993]

Subtopic: indexing by user up

Quote: users can index documents themselves; heavily used documents will be thoroughly indexed [»carlPA_1988]

Subtopic: full-text vs indexing up

Quote: study found searching on titles and abstracts as good as controlled keywords [»saltG7_1986]
Quote: literature indicates that text searching is as good or better than manual indexing [»saltG7_1986]

Subtopic: problems with indexing up

Quote: categories and indices decay; over time, they decline in relevance; e.g., Dewey Decimal system
[»nelsTH_1967]
