Summary

Hypertext links connect nodes and pages together. They are the defining characteristic of hypertext. From one page of content, a single selection takes you to another page.

Links are an implicit endorsement of the destination page. A search engine may use the link structure to identify important pages.

Pages may be linked for many different reasons. A link may expand on a topic, refute an idea, present an example, or discuss an idea. Links may be categorized by type or by location.

Links may be permanent or generated dynamically from a database. Links may become out-of-date or otherwise disconnected. (cbb 4/07)
